The Minkmen captured the FBL Commissioner’s Trophy for the third consecutive season this past Sunday. After shutting out the Mongos in the first round they were able to topple the Schmoozers in the championship game.
In the morning of August 29, 2021, the number four seed Mongos took on the number one seeded Minkmen. The game started as a nail-biter with three innings of scoreless baseball. But the Minkmen broke the game open in the 4th with four consecutive extra-base hits, including a two-run home run by Luigi Thode. They would go on to rack up nine runs in total in that inning and cruise to an 11-0 victory.
The Schmoozers then easily handled a shorthanded Bros squad with Mark Goldberg pitching a complete game, scattering 11 hits, and walking none to advance to the championship game.
In the afternoon championship game, the Minkmen offense continued to roll. After falling behind to the Schmoozers 3-2 they took a three-run lead in the bottom of the 3rd. A lead that Matt Osborne (CG, 1 ER, 11 K) and the Minkmen defense would never relinquish. In total, they were able to score 10 runs off Schmoozers’ ace, Ryan Clarke. Four of the runs being driven in by Miguel Ortiz to add to his impressive FBL Playoff career numbers: 17 for 30, 5 2B, 1 3B, 15 RBI, 1.415 OPS.
